JH Allen Reserve, Kellor East, Victoria

The Moonee Valley Council is consulting to gauge community support for a new synthetic field at JH Kellor Allan Reserve, Kelior East (behind Milleara Mall):

The development will incorporate:

* Cutting down a “significant number of existing trees”
* Removing natural grass from a sports field
* Laying fake synthetic turf on a sports field
* Installing fencing around a public space
* Installing 4 floodlighting towers
* Spending $4 – $5 million

Benefits

* Some extra hours of use for local sports clubs

Potential Impacts

* Increase in dangerous urban heat from current 9.63º above baseline (4th worst affected LGA – see comments for ref)
* Loss of tree canopy, habitat & biodiversity
* Kids in close contact with toxic “forever chemicals” (PFAS laced synthetic grass – see comments for ref)
* Increase of micro-plastics in local waterways
* Funding diverted from other essentials eg solar for apartments, saving food from landfill, safe cycling etc

Do the benefits outweigh the environmental & budget impacts?

Let’s find a solution for local kids to be able to play more soccer on a cool, soft and safe natural grass surface
