Friends of Fred Caterson Reserve are a volunteer working group of Cattai Hills Environment Network (CHEN). We are dedicated to protecting and enhancing the biodiversity of the reserve.
A remnant bushland oasis located at the headwaters of Cattai Creek in Castle Hill, Fred Caterson Reserve is home to several community sporting groups and many plant and animal species, some at risk of extinction.
The Master Plan for Fred Caterson Reserve includes:
- The expansion into bushland of most existing sporting facilities, and the construction of concrete pathways.
- Building an elite premier rugby complex on the former Pony Club site (for Eastwood Rugby at this time).
- Significant loss and impacts to remnant urban bushland, including areas of Critically Endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest
- Provision for up to 5 synthetic playing fields and additional tennis courts

Concerned residents say the council’s development plans threaten to pollute Cattai Creek which runs through the reserve where platypus eDNA was found in November 2022. They are also concerned about the harm to endangered plants and animals like the threatened Glossy Black Cockatoos that feed within the Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest for much of the year.
